In the main, stocks move with their sector peers unless there is a really good reason not to. Earnings material outperformance or major underperformance; regulatory impact; M&A activity - these are some of the reasons that stocks can diverge from the sector mean. But generally speaking if oil company A is rising then probably so too is oil company B. Which means that all the background logic sat behind $XOM’s recent price moves is also the case for $CVX.
